Privacy Policy

This policy describes the information Tennessee Criminal History receives during a visit, why that information is used, and the limited situations in which an outside party may receive it. It also explains how third-party search tools differ from this site's own operations. By continuing to browse or use the website, you consent to the practices stated in this policy.

Data You Give Us Directly

Search Queries

A name or location entered in a search tool is sent directly to the outside provider that operates that tool. The provider processes the query and supplies its own results. Tennessee Criminal History does not keep or log those search terms on its servers.

Messages and Contact Submissions

An email or other direct message may be retained so the team can respond and maintain the exchange. It is not shared outside the organization unless disclosure is required by a valid legal obligation.

Data We Gather Automatically

When a visitor loads a page, the site's systems may receive standard technical and usage details:

  • Pages viewed, visit length, and page-view timestamps
  • Device type and operating system
  • Referring website, when one is supplied
  • Browser type and version
  • The device's assigned IP address

Cookies and Analytics

Cookies are small files placed on a device. They help measure traffic patterns, such as which Tennessee record pages are used most often and where visits end. Analytics providers may combine that activity into summary reports. Visitors can block cookies through browser controls, although doing so may change how some website features behave.

What We Do With This Data

  • Detecting errors and resolving technical problems
  • Operating, securing, and improving website performance
  • Routing a search request to the selected partner service
  • Measuring which Tennessee resources visitors use
  • Displaying advertising that may reflect visitor interests

No Criminal-Record Data on File

Tennessee Criminal History does not maintain, compile, or sell a database of personal criminal records. Its reference material directs readers to the TBI Criminal Justice Information Services repository, the Tennessee Department of Correction, the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry, Tennessee courts, and public offices across all 95 counties. Tennessee's T.C.A. §38-6-120 dissemination framework governs official TBI criminal-history products, while the Tennessee Public Records Act, T.C.A. §10-7-503, governs access to qualifying government records held by their custodians. Neither law turns this private site into a records repository. Visitor information is not assembled into a consumer report, and this site is not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Third-Party Search Partners

Outside companies supply the search boxes shown on some pages. Information submitted through those tools is handled under the selected provider's privacy policy rather than this policy. Each provider decides how long to retain data and when to share it. Review those terms before sending a query because Tennessee Criminal History cannot control the provider's practices.

Links to Other Websites

Links may lead to TBI, TDOC, Tennessee court portals, county sheriffs and clerks, legal-aid resources, or outside search services. Once a visitor leaves Tennessee Criminal History, the destination's privacy policy controls. Read that policy before providing personal information.

Advertising companies may use their own systems to measure activity across websites and select interest-based ads. Their tracking is governed by their policies, not by this one.

Who Might See Your Data

Personal information is not sold. Limited data may be available to:

  • Government or law-enforcement bodies responding to a valid legal order
  • Advertising networks that place ads on website pages
  • Search partners that process queries submitted to their tools
  • Analytics vendors that measure traffic and performance

How We Protect Your Data

Reasonable, standard safeguards are used for information received by the site. No online service can guarantee perfect security, however. Tennessee Criminal History works to protect collected data but cannot promise that unauthorized access or a breach will never occur.

Users Under 18

The website is intended for adults and does not knowingly collect personal information from a person younger than 18. If information from a minor is identified, a request may be made for its deletion.

Your Data Rights

Rights concerning privately held website data depend on the law that applies to the visitor and the request. The Tennessee Public Records Act covers qualifying records held by Tennessee government custodians, not visitor data held by this private website. Subject to applicable law, a visitor may:

  • Opt out of certain kinds of data processing
  • Request deletion of personal data
  • Ask that inaccurate information be corrected
  • Request a copy of personal information held about them

Updates to This Policy

This privacy policy may be revised as website practices or legal requirements change. A revised version will be posted here and will carry a new effective date. Visitors should review the current version when they want to understand how information is handled.

Effective date: August 11, 2026
